Cinema: Calvary

A small Irish parish, strange events, sinister characters, and a troubled priest trying to lead the stray sheep, if not on the straight path, at least off the cliff edge: looking squarely at what faith means in the modern world, writer-director John Michael McDonagh has crafted a story replete with bleak humour, gorgeous landscape and complex characters, confronting us with questions of ethics and responsibility.

"It's a film of modest means and great ambition, a darkly comic drama concerned with nothing less than the place of faith, and an embattled Church, in modern life." Wall Street Journal
