Based on the novel of the same name by psycho-thriller queen Patricia Highsmith, and adapted and directed by Anthony Minghella, this is another film in our 'Gone Fishing' August theme that will make you feel glad you stayed at home. Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) is a restless young man whose talents are on the shady side of the law. With a full house of then-rising stars - Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett - and the gorgeous scenery of mid-50s New York and sunny Italy, it's an unsettling but moreish thriller worth revisiting.
Not only is it an elegantly polished affair, with top notch performances all round, and magnificent camerawork and editing, it's also acutely aware of how class, money and sex shape desire and resentment.
