Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, in 1977. He paid dearly for the privilege - but his political vision and his buoyant personality are still inspirational for all hopers and dreamers out there.
It's a wonderfully evocative film, radiating with warmth and humour, bristling too with righteous rage. (Daily Telegraph)
